Football fan scores with match day proposal
Karl Forshaw and Amy Smith are now united in love after Karl asked his girlfriend to marry him before Skem's home game against Marine.
Amy said yes, but had no idea what was going on when she was taken to the centre circle by Karl before the game.
She said: "I had an intuition that something funny was going on, but I did not know what."
It is a match made in heaven for Karl, 37, from Up Holland, and Amy Smith, 28, from Skelmersdale, who go and watch United home and away.
Amy added: "I did not think he had a romantic bone in his body, but he did get down on one knee, although he struggled to get back up.
"There was a good reaction from the crowd, and someone shouted give him a kiss."
Karl is a dedicated follower of United. He thought of the idea of asking Amy to marry him at the Marine game after talking to Skem's manager Tommy Lawson at his burger van on the Stanley Industrial Estate.
Karl said: "It is Valentine's Day this Thursday, and the proposal was part of my surprise for her. It was a bit of a shock for her, and I thought she was going to collapse.
"I had to ask her over the microphone. I was pleased that she said yes, but knew she would not say no."
The couple, who have been together over a year, planned to get married later this year and could even tie the knot at Skem's home ground.
"Hopefully we will get married in August this year, and we have even been talking about getting married on Skem's pitch before a game," Amy commented. "If that can't be done the wedding would be in the town."
