Bored oldies denying jobs to the young

BORED office workers are taking jobs intended for teenagers studying plumbing apprenticeships.

Despite asking more than 20 plumbing businesses for unpaid work experience, Southport teenager Sam Rawsthorn still hasn't been able to secure employment.

Paula Hardwick, of Learndirect Careers Advice, believes more and more people are leaving offices to work with their hands.

She told The Champion: "We are finding the trend is for people to leave traditional white collar employment and take up professions using their hands.

"Most people left school and found themselves in an unsuitable job 10 years down the line, now they want to retrain in an area that interests them.

"The plumbing industry is flooded and it is our role to find areas where there is a skills gap, it is no point in training for a trade where there are no roles."

Sefton Council were recently named Apprentice Employer of the Year and employ Apprentice of the Year, 19-year-old Gary Moore from Lydiate.

Emma Finnigan, of Sefton Council, said:  "We're really proud to receive this award, which demonstrates just how far Sefton Council has come with its Apprenticeship Programme."
