The Royal Hotel (Clifton) on the corner of Coronation walk.

(To The Right) you can see how the Promonade started with a slope upwards.
The lower *Pavilion Vaults" can be seen on the (Then Level) Coronation walk, this area was later filled over and slopped upward to meet the height of the promomade road in much the same way Nevill Street Subway was.

The (Lower) Pavilion Vaults and slopped (Upper) Promonade.

Here you can clearly see how the area sloped and the possition of the "Pavilion Vaults".

The same corner from a different angle.
Taken from the (Upper) Promonade and showing the (Lower) Coronation walk which was then a level road.

Thanks again for sharing Qwackz,  gif

It makes you wonder what secrets are buried under buildings in the town, I suppose some of them are still there.

post as many pictures as you like, its always extremely interesting to look at our town from years past.

Thanks again Qwackz
Yet more pics that I've not seen before (& I thought I'd read a lot about Southport's history)

If I'm not mistaken, the buildings in the 4th photo are the Winter Gardens & the Cheshire Lines Railway Station?

Was that before the station was built then?
The tower in the middle looked familiar to me - thought it was part of the frontage that still exists?

The Cheshire Lines Railway ran in existance alongside the Winter Gardens at the time.........

The clock tower built in 1894 that still exsists today was part of the frontage enterence to the Cheshire Liners ......

The tower in the pic was part of the Pavilion Theater..........

Cheers qwackz - I didn't realise that the Pavilion Theatre was as big as that.
Just goes to show how hard it can be to visualise something from old photos when the whole area has changed so much since. We only moved to Southport in the mid 70's so alot of it has always looked the same as it does now to me.
