Why don't you download the free version of Avast?   It really is the best.   It runs all the time and catches anything trying to invade your pooter

I'm looking to build myself a new rig, I've already got hard drives, DVD players/writer, case, power unit etc.

I can buy an AMD PhenomII 940 plus motherboard with 4 gig of  DDR800 memory for £229 (£249 with 8 gig of memory, thats all I need to sort it.

does anyone know if windows 7 is still available to pre order cheaply or have I missed it?

I really dont want to put vista on it! :scary:

Just an excuse to sell more copies of Windows and introduce more DRM if you ask me. If Linux keeps making strides in the way it has been doing over the past couple of years, I think that'll be the way I go once MS stops providing security updates for XP.

Do you know if Linux takes advantage of Duo and Quad processors?

As far as I can tell, yes it does. Specifically for Ubuntu:

Thanks for the info Argie on Ubuntu accessing duo and quad processors.  I'm about to enter phase one of transferring to Linux, changing my e-mail client.

Unless you have 64 bit versions of your applications like Office and anything else you will still only be able to access 3 Gb of Ram and only applications with the extra code can access duo and quad processors otherwise they only use a single processor.

I just had the 'pleasure' of reloading somebody's vista machine. I've beaten it into as much submission as possible, you can make it act remarkably like XP if you google all the tricks.

It still runs as well as a virus-damaged, registry-scrambled version of XP installed on a broken toaster though
